Abstract
The Nd-doped fiber laser can either operate in the continuous-wave regime or display undamped spiking. In the first case, most of the phenomena may be interpreted in the framework of model of a two-mode laser, in which each mode is associated with one polarization eigenstate. In the situation for which the output becomes spontaneously periodic or chaotic, we present the observed regimes and optical spectra. Then, we propose and check experimentally a feedback technique for suppressing these oscillations.
